In the General Information section, the article " A
Biocultural Approach to Breastfeeding"
offers an invaluable overview of breastfeeding from a
cross-cultural perspective. "Common
Breastfeeding Myths" is a
must-read for all new parents. The compelling article "More
Than Milk" discusses the
essential but often-ignored emotional aspects of breastfeeding. "LLLI
Philosophy" is the engaging story of the history
and philosophy of LLLI, showing how "mothering through
breastfeeding has enriched our lives as parents and as people in
ways we never anticipated".
The Breastfeeding Family section covers such helpful and
varied topics as starting solids, responding to criticism,
moving, camping, co-sleeping, and breastfeeding images in
children's books. " Food
Fight", an article about
family meals, offers thoughtful suggestions that would be useful
for all families.
The section on Extended Breastfeeding has a wealth of useful
information on this important topic. " Nursing
Beyond One Year" is an
excellent overview of the psychological, medical, and cultural
aspects of extended nursing. Other especially helpful articles
in this section discuss such common concerns as criticism from
relatives, benefits of extended breastfeeding, night waking, and weaning.
La Leche League International is a nonprofit organization
providing education, information, and support for breastfeeding
women through thousands of local groups. Their toll-free number,
1-800-LALECHE, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For
the name and phone number of a Leader in your area, call (847)
519-7730, follow the prompts and enter your zip code. Many
groups are also listed in the white pages of the local telephone
directory under "La Leche League".
We highly recommend the entire La
Leche League website, which
continues to be the best overall resource for breastfeeding
information on the Internet. The site offers an extensive
collection of informative and supportive articles, a
breastfeeding FAQ, a search engine, and lists of local chapters
throughout the world. We also recommend The
Womanly Art of Breastfeeding,
their "definitive guide" for nursing mothers and their
families.
